Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

Why is it expensive?

I know my scrapbooking services seem expensive, but please let me explain my pricing.  I typically spend 3 hours per layout and material costs average $8-10 per page.  Therefore, my hourly rate is actually quite low.  I know there are many sites that do these albums much cheaper. However, I believe it's apparent in the quality of their work. I would encourage you to visit some other websites, and I believe you will agree.  I have struggled with trying to keep my prices low to appeal to everyone, while still trying to preserve the craft and creativity of my work.  I have found that I'd much rather provide the most beautiful pages I can over compromising quality!

I promise that when you receive your layouts, you'll see that they're worth every penny!

How do I provide my photos?

If your photo collection is primarily prints, you should group related photos together and put them into labeled envelopes. Then package them all together and mail to:

Align with Design
8706 Cimarron Circle
Baltimore, MD 21234

Likewise, if your collection is digital, you should organize groups of photos into logical folders.  This will make the process much smoother.

You and I will discuss each layout before I begin. At this time, I will be able to get a sense of the look you want to achieve.

There are four options available for submitting your photos:
  1. Submit electronically (.tif or .jpg) via email, ftp, or mailed cd/dvd
  2. Submit original prints with permission for me to use in the layouts
  3. Submit original prints to be scanned and reprinted (scanning & reprinting fees apply).  Originals will be returned along with your completed order.
  4. Submit duplicate prints with permission for me to use in the layouts
When scanning is required, an extra $1.25/photo fee will apply.  All photo printing costs are charged separately and are provided by Ritz Camera.  Ritz uses the very latest digital imaging equipment and technologies, including "CSQ Crystal Image Prints & Processing" on FujiFilm.
What is journaling?

Journaling is the story that accompanies your pictures and is one of the most important parts of your album. It is a written account of the photos and can take the form of a narration, first person account, poem, or even just an abstract list of associated words that characterize the moment. Align with Design's custom pages all include computer-generated journaling. You will need to provide the who, what, when, where, why, and how of your photo collection and any other stories that you want included.  If you would prefer a more personal touch, I will leave space on each page and provide a permanent, acid-free black marker for you to do your own journaling.

How long will it take to complete my album?

This will depend on how many photographs and the level of detail you want in your album. We will go over this at your initial consultation. Generally, a 10 page 12x12 album will take about 3 weeks to complete.

How do I pay?

Align with Design accepts cash, personal checks, money orders, cashier's checks, and paypal. Full payment is due in advance. Upon the completion of your project, there will be another final invoice to cover any additional fees such as photo scanning or reprinting, shipping, and the cost of the scrapbook album itself.

What is acid and lignin-free?

Acid-free paper is paper that has a neutral or basic pH (7 or greater), although paper having a pH between 6 and 7 is often also considered acid-free. During production, it is treated with a mild base to neutralize the natural acids occurring in wood pulp, and it may also be buffered to prevent the formation of additional acids (as may develop from the application of sizing.

Acid-free paper is often used in books and other paper products intended to last for a long time. Paper that has not had its acidity neutralized (such as newsprint quickly yellows and deteriorates.

Lignin makes up about one-quarter to one-third of the dry mass of wood and is an integral part of the cell walls.  Cheaper papers (such as newsprint) have a high lignin content which causes the paper to discolor over time.  This is a result of the lignin causing acid to reform within the paper fibers.  Lignin can be removed during the manufacturing process to ensure that the scrapbooking paper remains acid-free for a long time.

Can I submit slides to be included in the album?

Yes. Slide scanning is performed by HighDPI.com using state of the art scanning equipment that produces 4000 dpi, print-ready images (scanning fees apply - $2.00/slide). From these image files, Ritz Camera will provide prints on FujiFilm. All photo printing costs are also charged separately.
